Vascular Ultrasound

Department of vascular ultrasound， Xuanwu hospital, the Capital Medical University was founded in Jan 2007. There are currently 34 staffs in the department of vascular ultrasonography, including 30 physicians (1 Chief physician, 4 associate chief physicians, 11 attending doctors and 14 resident doctors), 2 data entry staffs and 2 nurses. Among the physicians, there are 1 doctoral supervisor, 7 M.D. and 20 masters. We totally have 8 examination rooms with more than 20 high-quality ultrasound instruments and 12 transcranial Doppler (TCD) instruments. Under the director of Professor Hua Yang, cerebrovascular，carotid artery，abdominal large vessels and limbs vessels are our main clinical and research areas. The patient number is increasing by more than 10% year by year. In 2017, more than 150,000 cases/year were detected in our department. In our department, the positive rate of stenosis and occlusion lesions of cerebrovascular and carotid artery are more than 30%, with a diagnostic accuracy about 95%.

Professor Hua yang has been adhering to the concept of “Standard, Precise and Clinical Service. She and the team carried out integrated evaluation of extra-cranial and intra-cranial arteries since May, 1997 and have established the standard examination methods for patients with cerebrovascular diseases. Since 2000, the team began and gradually established an integrate pre-operative, intraoperative and post-operative system for evaluating the carotid artery recanalization surgery (including stenting, carotid artery endarterectomy CEA and superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery graft). At the same time, a professional and well-trained team for CEA has been established. Since 2013, the team has taken the lead carrying out transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS/TCCD) in the country and further increases the diagnostic accuracy. Moreover, the team has developed more than 10 novel techniques evaluating the cerebrovascular, abdominal vessels, limbs vessels as well as internal jugular veins.

Since 2006, Professor Hua Yang has led the team publishing a series of ultrasound diagnostic criteria of carotid artery, vertebral artery, subclavian artery, middle cerebral artery and basilar artery stenosis. These ultrasound criteria have been well recognized within the field of ultrasound and the vertebra artery ultrasound diagnostic criteria were cited by the 2017 guideline written by Europe Society of Vascular Surgery. In 2015, we organized and conducted the first ultrasound multi-centers projects involving 20 hospitals in China. Till June 2018, we have been in charge of near 20 national and Beijing projects, published 20 professional books and more than 200 articles. It should be noted that we have been established the first structured database of vascular ultrasound with intellectual property rights in China. As one of the main completion units, we have been awarded the 5 National and Beijing Scientific and Technology Progress .

Our department has become the pioneer in the field of vascular ultrasound in China and has a certain international reputation. In Dec, 2005, the Beijing Health Commission (formerly the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau) set up the Beijing Vascular Diagnostic Center in our hospital. In 2009 and 2010, our department were awarded as the National Standard Training Center by Chinese Medical Doctor Association of Ultrasonography and the Stroke Prevention and Treatment Project, National Health Commission. From 2010 to 2018, we have organized 25 terms training classes with more than 4,000 trainees from all over the country. We annually receive the professional technique physicians from all regions of the country for advance study.
