With the increasing demands of the people for health care and disease diagnosis and treatment, the Vascular surgery institute Capital Medical University was formally established in 2002 on the basis of thoracic cardiovascular surgery department Xuanwu Hospital CMU. The Institute is one of the early professional research centers focused on peripheral arterial disease in China. At the beginning, Professor Wang Zhonghao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the chief founder of Chinese vascular surgery, and Professor Dong Zongjun, a famous expert in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery field, both served as honorary directors, while Professor Zhang Jian served as Director. After more than ten years of struggle and construction, the Institute has become a frontier research center with clinical, scientific research and combined with teaching. It has important influence in the field of vascular surgery in China and is well known in the international vascular surgery field.

The institute included vascular surgery, interventional center, regenerative medicine laboratory, vascular surgery examination center and surgical (vascular surgery) teaching and research department. At the early eighties of the last century, we took the lead in the successful use of balloon angioplasty in the treatment of renal artery stenosis and other vascular stenosis diseases. At present, there are 41 clinical beds. In recent years, the diagnosis and treatment of various vascular diseases such as aorta, great saphenous veins, peripheral vascular diseases and diabetic foot were carried out, among which total laparoscopy was used to treat abdominal aortic lesions. Minimally invasive treatment of arteriosclerosis of lower extremities, comprehensive treatment of diabetic angiopathy and combined treatment of aortic lesions have achieved remarkable results.

The institute has doctorate and master degree training and post-doctoral station, taking on the teaching task of Capital Medical University. There are 3 doctorate tutors, 6 masters tutors, 5 postdoctoral students, 28 PhDs and 34 masters. Has the national outstanding teaching team and the national fine quality teaching material, publishes one national level fine quality curriculum, two national level textbooks, has one “Beijing teaching famous teacher”.

Since the establishment of the Institute, Professor Wang Zhonghao and Professor Zhang Jian have been the leaders of the discipline, and Professor Gu Yongquan, as the academic leader, has carried out various clinical, basic research, including national 863 projects, and the National key Science and Technology Program. The National Natural Science Foundation, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, the Capital Medical Development Fund, the Beijing Science and Technology Commission, the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, the Beijing Education Commission, Capital Medical Development Research Fund, research projects, and more than 60 research projects. In the diagnosis and treatment of senile vascular diseases, vascular tissue engineering research, stem cell treatment of peripheral vascular ischemic diseases and other areas of in-depth research, in the relevant basic research achievements and completed research accumulation. At the same time, the Institute is a clinical trial base of vascular surgery medicine approved by the State Drug Administration.
