Undergraduate Medical Education
Xuanwu Hospital is the first affiliated hospital of Capital Medical University. It is the clinical teaching base of Colleges of Biomedical Engineering, Nursing, General Family Medicine and Continuing Education at Capital Medical University. It is also the national experimental practice teaching demonstration center and experimental unit of national "outstanding physician education and training program". Xuanwu Hospital takes charge of clinical teaching and practice tasks of undergraduate students (long-term, five-year term clinical medicine, international students, evening college, top-up, nursing higher vocational education and other levels) every year. Among them, clinical medicine and nursing are at the national level as featured professions and the "first-class professions" in Beijing. Every year, more than 700 students study in clinical medicine and nursing.
In 1997, Xuanwu Hospital passed the assessment of clinical teaching bases of Beijing higher medical colleges in the first batch. In 2004, it was awarded the grade of “excellence” from Ministry of Education during the undergraduate teaching level appraisal of Capital Medical University. In 2014, Xuanwu Hospital passed the certification of undergraduate education of clinical medicine by Ministry of Education with high level. It was praised by domestic and foreign experts for its training process and educational quality. The one-off employment rate in graduates is maintained above 97% every year. In addition, the passing rate of physician qualification examination is above 95%.
This academy has a three-level teaching organization. It established an academy educational committee in 1991. Under this committee, there are education department and teaching and research office. The education department is responsible for organizing, guiding, implementing and inspecting the teaching work and the teaching and research office implements director's responsibility system.
The academy attaches great importance to building a high-level teaching team and has 2 national excellent teaching teams of “neurology” and “surgery”, as well as 3 famous teachers in Beijing. It has more than 400 clinical teachers with 216 advanced certificates, 110 intermediate certificates, 91 professors and 111 associate professors. The academy has 2 national quality courses, 1 national bilingual demonstration course, 2 national quality resource sharing courses, 3 excellent courses in Beijing and 14 university-level online courses. In recent 3 years, it has participated in writing 8 national planning textbooks as editor-in-chief or associate editor and 1 Beijing classic textbook. Since 1997, it organized the university "general surgery" training class, "young teachers’ basic teaching skills" training class and "physical diagnosis" training class. So far, it has started 23 projects and become a brand of the university. Since 2009, it has held the national advanced training class for young backbone clinical teachers, which has attracted more than 30 units and 150 teachers around the country every year.
As a national interdisciplinary senior medical personnel training innovation pilot zone, the academy implements the top-notch innovative medical personnel training mode of Ministry of Education and National Health and Family Planning Commission. Based on medical education standard and oriented by professional competency, the training course of clinical comprehensive ability and the comprehensive training course of basic clinical skills are offered. It has applied the modes of combination of simulation and bedside teaching, combination of analogue simulation and real cases to strengthen the practice teaching and training of clinical ability.The ratio of theory to practice has reached 1:1.
With complete teaching facilities and independent teaching building, the academy has established a clinical skills training and assessment center earlier, and is the national experimental teaching demonstration center. There are 19 training rooms, complete information management, online examination and OSCE assessment system, covering the whole process of medical education. It is the national medical qualification examination base, the training base for examiners of Beijing medical qualification examination. It is also the examination base for completion of clinical practice ability of resident physicians. More than 2000 people are examined here every year.
