When President Xi Jinping visited Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in June 2013, he promised to send 100 medical personnel to the Caribbean in the next three years. Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University was assigned by the National Health Planning Commission as the first Chinese medical aid team to assist the Trinidad and Tobago.
Hongqi Zhang, Director of the Department of Neurosurgery, served as the captain and led doctors from eight professions, including Department of Neurosurgery, Neurology, General Surgery, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, Respiratory, and Vascular Ultrasound of Xuanwu Hospital for a six-month diplomacy medical assistance.
From August 2014 to February 2015, the medical team completed a total of 546 operations in the local area, 10040 rounds of ward rounds, 1315 consultations, 870 ultrasound examinations, 916 medical treatments, and 67 lectures. They completed the first complicated intracranial arteriovenous malformation embolization, the first whole cerebral angiography, the first intracranial aneurysm embolization, the first transcranial Doppler ultrasonography, the first electromyography Check, etc, in Republic of Trinidad and Tobago history. The team was received by the President and the Prime Minister of Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The medical assistance was widely recognized by Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and won praise for our country.
